LOSS & GLEE: THE GEAR UP Images will be shot next week for the PR for the Loss & Glee exhibitions in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I'm sure I'll be sending out a mass email as well, so if you want one, email me at dottschneider@hotmail.com with the subject "mailing list."
In the meantime, here is a copy of the current statement:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Cleveland, Ohio January 6, 2005
Dott Schneider: Loss & Glee at the Miller-Weitzel Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio: Sept. 2, 2005 Dott Schneider: Loss & Glee at the BoxHeart Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Sept. 3, 2005
Dott Schneider’s latest work is a continuation of her study of Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse. These two volumes, titled Loss and Glee respectfully, contain 20 paintings each. The works are mixed media with stories about loss and glee as related to love, that Schneider has collected for over a year (and is still collecting) from people spanning the globe. Wherein Reflections & Complaints* purposefully handed over a voyeuristic experience, these pieces intend to bring the viewer into the work on a more intimate level. It’s 4AM, a painting inspired by and integrated with a story from South Africa, relays the hauntingly empty feeling of fault and the consequential loss of a lover.
“In 2002 I began my examination of Barthes’ 83 essay collection, A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments. Drawing on the book as reference for deconstructing the relationship between the lover and the loved one (or object), I used self-portraiture as my vehicle while remaining faithful to cosmetics as my medium. This first volume of paintings in a series of nine is a testament of “love letters, bandages and screams.” (Douglas Max Utter, Angle Magazine #10). The focal point for many of the paintings in the first volume, titled Reflections & Complaints of the Lover When Alone is the mouth, which is the fount of the lover’s discourse. Each painting is stamped on the frame with its title, alluding to Barthes’ interest in the visual aesthetic of the text.”
Half of Loss and Glee will be exhibited concurrently in Cleveland, Ohio at the Miller-Weitzel Gallery, located at 5304 Detroit Avenue on September 2, 2005 and the other half in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the BoxHeart Gallery, located at 4523 Liberty Avenue on September 3, 2005.

RIP ANNE BANCROFT. :( Anne Bancroft passed away yesterday. She was one of my favorite actresses. And I know everyone's going to write it but so what: God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson.

UMBERTO ECO'S NEW BOOK. SCHNEIDER REJOICES. I can barely contain my excitement! Umberto Eco, my absolutely favorite writer and semiologist, has a new book out called The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana. I'm still trying to get through Baudolino and The Island of the Day Before.
I suppose that I'll have more time to read now that I've decided to continue taking the rapid to work.

THANK DOG IT'S FRIDAY! It's been a long week. After the long weekend, it's "go time" with the solo exhibitions including press releases and other publicity including but not limited to images, et al. Keep yer peepers peeled.
I trashed some of the paintings I did for Loss & Glee because I didn't like the way they turned out, I'm going back to my original idea and can hopefully incorporate what's needed without breaking the bank. This was after seeing the awesome art of Joe Day at the Miller-Weitzel Gallery.
Have a great weekend, all.
